Blog With Benefits

I started this blog by writing my first Post on August 27, 2011.  In that Post, I shared that I had this recurring thought to write a blog about my search for God in St. John's County. Since moving to St. Augustine in June 2010, I feel as though I found my little piece of heaven here on earth.

This blog has far exceeded my original expectation of documenting my "reconnection" with a church family to learn more about God.  During my long hiatus from a church fellowship, I never really lost faith or changed my core beliefs.  These things had become part of who I am thanks to the church family I had in my youth.  Reverend and Mrs. Hunter, Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Joralemon, Mrs. Weidman, and so many of the other wonderful church family members of my youth, thank you for that.  So, as I reflect on what this blog has done for me I came up with a few benefits:
  1. I learned in my career that I like to write, I wrote many papers and grants and found that it was one of my strengths. Following my retirement I found an emptiness not having a reason to write.  This blog helps fill that need.
  2. Reading the Bible was on my bucket list.  I didn't know how or when I would begin, I didn't have a plan for attacking it in a way that would make sense to me.  Another thing I did in my career, plan, and without one I felt a bit in the dark.  This blog has helped me formulate a reading plan and I am excited about getting started.
  3. I've heard from people, some I don't even know, that they read my blog at a time when they needed to hear that days message.  This has given me energy to go on.
  4. Doing a daily blog has resulted in my thinking about God on a daily basis.  In the past, there were months when God was nowhere to be seen.  My daily reflection is helping me to understand His plan for my life.
  5. Until doing the blog I never really understood how important it was to read the Bible.  To know God's word has provided a level of comfort and peace that I have not felt before.
  6. There are many topics in my Post that require research.  I often go on the web to find sites that have information to help me fill in gaps.  I am finding that there are questions I never thought to ask.  I've been living in an "I don't know what I don't know" world, having access to information through the net has helped enlighten me.
  7. The internet is a permanent record.  That means that my children, grandchildren, and so on, will get to know who I was, what I thought and what I did to be a better man.  I hope they are able to see how important it was for me to strengthen my branch of the family tree and how important it was that God was leading me.
